Karl’s Asylum ... for the terminally deranged

So..holidays!

Yep, school’s out! So, therefore, I am on hols. OK, I work 2 weeks, but whoopee..no loss.

This last week, I have re-imaged…about 130 odd PCs, with a new updated build of XP, Office 2003, and loads of other programs. We can only normally do a few due to the machines being in use. Nobody’s around though, so I’ve been going floor by floor wiping the lot.

This would have been considerably more awkward if I’d had to use a windows machine as an image source…I have to say this, LINUX ROCKS! I had a linux box set up to serve the image file(4.6Gb), and 80 machines accessing it at once didn’t even faze it.

I reckon I’ve got about 10 more to do, and I can do those on monday.

Then, the network is being taken out..here’s to gigabit! Heh.

I also decided to buy a couple of things I’ve been pondering a while. When at work someone brings me a PC to fix, I have to wait for a break so I can go and plug it in place of a workstation to see what it’s doing. This is tedious, and so I’ve finally (after months of cursing and promising myself) bought a 2 port KVM switch for £12.

The other thing I bought is an admission of the fact that I stick to roads I know, and can’t navigate my way out of a paper bag. I bought a Garmin Streetpilot i2 portable sat-nav unit.

So far, it’s been good! I updated the firmware from V2.70 to 3.10, thinking “that’ll be the best”. No, it got me onto a roundabout and crashed. heh. Back to V2.70, and it’s spot on.

It’s tiny…think “Rubiks cube” and that’s close. The screen is monochrome (the colour i3 is £20 more), and the speaker is plenty loud enough. I’ve set it up for english (the american voice is irritating), and it’s quite odd to drive upto a roundabout or junction and hear someone say “in 300 metres, turn right“, or “Enter roundabout, and take 2nd exit“.

I’ve tried driving round the roundabout several times to throw it off, and all it says is “recalculating.“. Impressive.

As an added bonus, I’ve been able (with the help of various forums) to upload the gatso speed camera database to it, so it warns me now if I’m approaching a speed restricted area, and what my speed should be. Nice.

Anyway..I’m off for a cuppa.
